The role of Biomarkers in relation to Skin and Hair biology.
Your skin and hair are influenced by a wide range of processes within the body, including nutrition, hormones, metabolism and cellular function. Our At-Home Self-Test Package measures selected biomarkers that may provide insights. The potential relevance of each biomarker is described below.
IRON
Oxygen, energy, skin and hair
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body. It also supports normal energy production and many cellular processes. Skin and hair follicles are active tissues that depend on oxygen and nutrients to support their normal function. When iron deficiency occurs, it can be associated with tiredness, paler-looking skin and hair shedding, particularly when deficiency is significant.
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D & skin/hair biology
Vitamin D has important roles in normal cell function and immune regulation. The skin is one of the body's sites where vitamin D is produced, and skin cells, including melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin-have vitamin D receptors. This makes vitamin D relevant to understanding normal skin biology and overall wellness. Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to diffuse hair thinning and nail brittleness.
THYROID
Hormones, skin & hair
Thyroid hormones influence metabolism and cellular activity throughout the body. Skin and hair follicles respond to thyroid hormones, so changes in thyroid function can be associated with changes such as dryness, skin texture, sweating and hair characteristics. TSH is a hormone used as a marker when assessing thyroid function.
CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol & the skin barrier
Cholesterol is one of the lipids naturally found in the outer skin barrier, alongside ceramides and fatty acids. This barrier helps protect the skin and reduce water loss. Keeping water within the outer layers of the skin helps maintain normal hydration, flexibility and barrier function. It is important to understand that a blood cholesterol test measures cholesterol circulating in your blood — it does not measure the cholesterol in your skin barrier.
MENOPAUSE
Hormones, skin & hair
Hormonal changes during menopause can be associated with changes in skin and hair. Hormones interact with skin cells and hair follicles, making hormonal health relevant to understanding skin and hair biology.
LIVER
Nutrient processing,skin & hair
The liver supports many processes that are important throughout the body, including metabolism, nutrient processing and hormone handling. Changes in liver function can sometimes be associated with changes in the skin, while normal liver function supports the wider physiology involved in skin and hair biology.
GLUTEN
Immune response,skin
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and possibly other foods. In people with coeliac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response that can influence the small intestine and affect nutrient absorption. Coeliac disease can also be associated with certain skin manifestations, such as dermatitis herpetiformis. A gluten/coeliac test is therefore relevant to general health and, in specific circumstances, skin biology. It does not test skin health or diagnose other skin conditions.
